In the current technological context, anthropization of the natural environment modifies roughly
and radically the nature and the organization of the constituent materials of soils. These materials
interact with the parent rock and are submitted to a pedogenetic evolution under influences of
climate, biological activity and topographical conditions according to the three fundamental
processes: weathering, transportation and accumulation. It leads to pedological profiles which
are notably different of those observed on natural parent rock and have functional properties
(e.g. food, filter, storage), which do not fit to agronomical demands. Fauna takes part in several
processes in soils : bioturbation (energy and matter cycles, (Lavelle et al. 1997)), aggregation
(Bossuyt et al. 2005), organic matter decomposition (C and N cycles, (Lavelle and Spain 2001))
which can modify indirectly others processes as eluviation, leaching, chemical weathering. The
results can lead to modifications of mineral nutrition and growth of plants (Huhta 2007).
Nevertheless, the part of the faunal diversity on the soil processes is still unknown, even though
some studies demonstrated that modifications of diversity could influence the growth of plants
(Huhta 2007).
The scientific questions of this project focus on the capacity of fauna (particularly functional
diversity, (Cortet et al. 2003; Heemsbergen et al. 2004)) to contribute to the rehabilitation of
these soils. We focus on the mechanism and the evolution of Technosol, which can be natural
soils, modified by human activities or constructed soils with waste (e.g.).
In our study, we focus on a constructed soil made of clean-up industrial soil, paper sludges and
compost. Fauna will be introduced on three experimental systems representing three different
scales: one hectare plots, field lysimeters and laboratory experiences (mesocosms).
This poster will present the concept of experiments and the first results obtained.
This work is supported by the ADEME (French Environmental Agency), the Lorraine region and
